I'm not trying to embarrass the performer. I sincerely hope that's a beginning voiceover person who was further hampered by lack of competent direction.

But there really should be a law against her saying "fluent in funky."

PAT FRALEY DIRECTS VOICEOVER NEWBIE

At this year's International Radio Creative & Production Summit, Patrick Fraley conducted a workshop entitled GETTING FUNNY FAST: The Art of Voiceover Comedy. Pat doesn't just lecture; he teaches. He pulls people onstage to demonstrate how any voiceover artist can improve with just a little expert coaching.

When he "volunteered" this young man from among the attendees, however, Pat didn't realize that was the only non-pro in the audience. It was my nephew, a college student (philosophy major!) who was helping out behind the scenes.

He's never been behind a microphone before — which probably is why he was so easy to coach: He didn't first need to unlearn all the wrong, dumb things so many "professionals" cling to.
