Everyone Thinks It's So Easy....

I'm talking about producing Dave Foxx's Radio Station Imaging teleseminar. Everyone probably thinks, "Hey, how hard can it be? Send out an e-mail or two and then just open the phone lines for 70 minutes."

Well, it's a little bit more time consuming than that. Even when there are no technical glitches.

I've already told you how our Web host's server melted down, we lost an entire week trying to recover, etc.

We finally had everything working perfectly late last night (or, early this morning) when we went "live" — when we opened up the registration page.

Just before stumbling into bed, I sent an email to one of my Web guys (Gustavo), suggesting a technical change we should make for the NEXT time we do a teleseminar.

Unfortunately, Gustavo is very gung-ho and decided to go ahead and make that change today -- as a pleasant surprise for me.

But that change messed up some of the other registration functions -- which I didn't learn about until I came back into the office this morning. (They've been fixed. Supposedly.)

All I know is I've told Gustavo, "Don't touch ANYTHING until we've sold out and taken down the registration page!"

By the way, in the first 11 hours after opening up registrations, 75 people from around the world have signed up. We've reserved a total of 245 phone lines. So if my arithmetic is correct, 30% of the spaces already have been snatched up.

(Bjarke — thanks for being the very first one. You registered even before I could send out the email announcements!)

P.S. Hey, y'know there's a new REAL post by me on this page, a little lower down. Not about the teleseminar.

I'm pretty excited about this seminar. I am from Regina, Saskatchewan in a medium market, so I don't get alot of ideas from anyone on how to better my imaging. I am hoping I can get a few more key tricks to add to my sessions.

Thanks

That makes me wonder: Of the questions listed on the Ask Dave Foxx page, which ONE is most important to you?

It would be interesting to hear if everyone selects the same "most important" question.

I'm guessing the one that really perplexes PDs and imaging producers alike is, "How often should station imaging promos be changed?"

I am SOOOO looking forward to this seminar. I have "dabbled" in imaging at the various stations I have worked for but I really have had very little guidence. I am hoping to find out about some of the technical apsects PDs and consultants don't tell you about (even some of the productions guys). You know like when they say "just make the liners pop." 'k how do I do that

We're still sorting through the questions, but at the moment I think Question #7 is going to be one that is so technical that I didn't understand one of the terms.

So I called another big production friend of mine to ask him what that phrase means — and he didn't know, either.

But Dave knows.

Which is why he's conducting this Radio Station Imaging seminar and not my other big shot voiceover/production friend.

I am really looking forward to this teleseminar from the aspect of the person voicing the imaging. I had the honor of being on stage with Dave when he did his "Anatomy of a Station Promo" at the 2006 Summit and watched him create a promo in real time using my voice. It was an experience I will never forget.
For those of you not familiar with Dave's work, (perhaps you were being held at Gitmo?) all the more reason to join the teleseminar!

That raises an interesting point about station imaging: It seems half the people who do it think it's all about the tools, while the other half thinks it's all about the voice.

Not that Janet is one of those. But when she came up onstage with Dave, I'm pretty sure she wasn't thinking, "I wonder what kind of compression he'll use on my voice?"

By the way, if you attend this year's Summit be sure to ask Janet about some of the ways she markets her VO services. She's REALLY good at it.

@ Dragonfire:

If someone instructs you to "make the liners pop" but you don't know what they mean (and how could you? That's a very vague direction), just say to them:

"When you say 'make them pop,' exactly what do you mean by that?"

A professional will be able to answer that question.

An amateur will stammer, "Uh, y'know, just make them POP!"
